When I moved to Spain two years ago, I thought I would get a job teaching English for a while, maybe pick up some Spanish and travel around Europe. Little did I know that I would do that and much more. I fell in love, with Spain first then with a Spanish man.
The first thing that I was attracted to was his Spanish accent when he spoke English and then the second was when I heard him speak Spanish. I don’t think I am alone thinking that accents, dialects and languages are sexy. In fact, according to CNN, “71% of Americans and 61% of Britons believe speaking more than one language makes a person seem more attractive”. There is an excitement that can be found in learning and speaking another language. The first time he told me he loved me was in English and then in Spanish.
Afar Travel says that: “Most humans are capable of—if not wired for—meaningful emotional connection and deep affection toward others. Still, there are many ways to express love, the most basic of which begins with saying the words.”
Obviously, language is a huge part of our lives. We are constantly explaining and defining words, expressions, and customs. As I have discussed in previous blog posts, language expands your skillsets and can break through cultural barriers.
If you are already in a bilingual or multilingual relationship, Education First has a few tips for you: communicate, laugh, be curious, be flexible, be patient and have fun! Do you agree?
Not looking to date? Why not fall in love with a language like Luca Lampariello who fell in love with the Hungarian language. He claims that:
“Learning a language is like embarking on a romantic relationship. Your relationship with your language will require time, energy, compromise, and sacrifice in order to survive in the long-term, just as any human relationship will. Just as these elements are essential to any healthy relationship, the spark of love is the most essential element of all.”
As you can see, one of the many benefits of learning another language is that speaking another language can give you an opportunity to meet other people, exchange cultural customs and maybe even fall in love! Happy Valentine’s Day! Y Buenos suerte!
