How Can I Learn Spanish Faster?
If you’ve typed this or a similar question into Google, then you’re in the right place! Whether you’re interested in learning Spanish or English, accelerating your language learning is not impossible. It, most certainly, does not take an entire school career of 12 years! This post offers some super practical tips to get speaking Spanish faster!
Learning a new language is as much a joy as it is a challenge. You might feel discouraged with your progress or frustrated by mistakes. But I’m here to tell you that mistakes are GOOD and swift progress is POSSIBLE. Read on to see how.
Tips for Learning Spanish Faster
If you think of your mother tongue and how you acquired it, you will realise that learning it did not require classes or grammar rules. You acquired your mother tongue naturally, without realising it. While classes are essential for learning a new language, they are only one part of your language journey.
The other part is what I would call immersion - which is how you acquired your mother tongue. This word pretty sums up the tips below - and also represents the teaching system we use at Oxinity - which you can benefit from starting RIGHT NOW!
1. Speak Spanish
This is essential! Whether you find a practice buddy online or you have some Spanish friends, you need to practice speaking in the target language everyday (if possible). One piece of advice I like to give my students is to join a sports club, church, interest or volunteer group that speaks the target language. Here, you’ll be forced to speak and will make new friends in the process. Whatever you do, don’t let weeks go by without uttering a single word in Spanish! This simply won’t do. As my colleague Georgina says, “SPEAKING CAN ONLY BE LEARNED BY SPEAKING” - which is why conversations form the basis of our classes here at Oxinity too!
2. Read Spanish
Read the news in the language you are learning. Read the Spanish translation of your favourite novel. Switch your browser language and re-read a post from your favourite blog. There is no end to the amount of reading you can do to improve your Spanish. Your options here are endless. But try and focus on reading material that is topical, current or in line with a subject that you are already interested in. Another trick is to activate Spanish subtitles on a Spanish movie. This is a great way to get used to how words should sound when you see them.
3. Listen to Spanish
Consider your interests and passions again here. Do you follow politics? Do you enjoy sports or comedy? Cooking, music or fashion? Find and follow Spanish podcasts and YouTube channels that cover topics you love. If you are already familiar with and interested in a topic it will be easier to acquire the target language that relates to it. Also, if you are not a good listener, now is the time to improve. While interacting with your newly-found Spanish friends, cultivating listening skills will be one of your keys to both improving in the new language and being a better friend ;)
4. Repeat and Review
This does not only mean going through your notes after a class. One practical way to review is to keep a vocabulary notebook and consistently write down new words and phrases with their definitions. This can be done after every class and - even better - throughout the day as you expose yourself to the target language using the tips above.
Furthermore, what I like to call “proactive review” is made up of four essential and interrelated elements: process, solidify, identify and fill. To learn effectively, we need to be able to process new knowledge, solidify acquired knowledge, identify gaps in knowledge and fill those gaps with further knowledge. It is through this process that your progress is activated and accelerated. This is it! This is where the magic happens.
While review is something you can do on your own outside the classroom, with Oxinity, “proactive review” is a supported effort all the way! This takes place through continuous evaluation performed by both your teacher and the Oxinity Teaching System. Your teacher will track your progress on the system. The system then uses this information to identify gaps in your knowledge and automatically fills those gaps through the allocation of the required content to your next class! And voila! Accelerated progress! All you need to do (besides real-life practice) is participate - in class and on the Web App! Here’s how:
