¡¡Hablemos del tiempo!!

¿Dónde estamos en el tiempo? Esto puede ser un poco complicado porque contamos el tiempo en milenios, siglos, décadas, años, meses, días (y horas, minutos y segundos).

1 millennium = 10 centuries = 1000 years
1 century = 10 decades – 100 years
1 decade = 10 years = 3652 days
1 year = 12 months = 365 days

Cuando hablamos del tiempo, utilizamos los términos B.C. y A.D., pero ¿qué significan? Indican la división temporal en años y siglos dentro de la era cristiana, de modo que B.C. es "Antes de Cristo" y A.D. es "Después de Cristo". También verá los términos BEC ("Antes de la Era Común/Cristiana") y CE ("Era Común/Cristiana").

Ahora mismo vivimos en el siglo XXI – 21st century, pero en realidad este año es 2024, y el año 2124 será el siglo XXII – 22nd century. Por eso hubo tanto debate en el cambio de siglo: ¿cómo decir correctamente las fechas de fin de siglo y principio de milenio?

31^st of December 1999 – thirty-first of December nineteen ninety-nine
1^st of January 2000 – first of January two thousand

Mientras que algunos idiomas utilizan números romanos para ordenar los siglos, en inglés siempre contamos los siglos en números ordinales. Estos clasifican los números en orden y son muy fáciles de recordar cuando se reconoce el patrón.

First = 1^st
Second = 2^nd
Third = 3^rd

And after that everything is ‘th’

Fourth = 4^th; Fifth = 5^th ; Sixth = 6^th ; Seventh = 7^th ; Eighth = 8^th ; Ninth = 9^th ; Tenth = 10^th

Podemos hablar de los años de varias maneras diferentes. Por ejemplo,

The Alhambra in Spain was built between the 13^th and 15^th centuries (e.g. between 1238 and 1492).
The Renaissance period was between 1400 and 1600 / fourteen hundred and sixteen hundred.
The 20^th Century started in 1900 / nineteen hundred.

Aunque los números son fáciles de escribir, los años pueden ser difíciles de pronunciar con precisión. Por ejemplo: 706; 1500; 1945; 2000; 2009; 2012; 2024. Son tantos números que incluso los alumnos de nivel avanzado suelen cometer errores.

En inglés, los años suelen dividirse en dos partes, por lo que la forma más fácil de pronunciar las fechas es decir los dos primeros números y luego los dos últimos.

1984 is divided into 19 + 84 and you would say nineteen eighty-four

1492 = 14 + 92 = fourteen ninety-two

1066 = 10 + 66 = ten sixty-six

Luego llegamos al nuevo milenio y las cosas cambiaron un poco, empezando por el año 2000 = dos mil. Sin embargo, para los años 2001-2010, la forma más común de decir los años es dos mil + número. Veamos algunos ejemplos.

2000 = two thousand

2001 = two thousand and one (UK) / two thousand one (USA)

2005 = two thousand and five (UK) / two thousand five (USA)

Para los años posteriores a 2010, es posible que escuche diferentes alternativas, por ejemplo,

2012 = twenty twelve

2018 = twenty eighteen

2024 = twenty twenty-four

Existen otras alternativas porque cuando el año termina en un número entre 01 y 09, por ejemplo, 1802, entonces la última parte del número se pronuncia como el nombre de la letra "oh" + número,

807 = eight oh seven

1802 = eighteen oh two

2005 = twenty oh five (two thousand and five)

Y ten cuidado con la pronunciación, por ejemplo, dieciséis y sesenta, o diecinueve y noventa.

En inglés americano se escriben las fechas:
