Shhhhh… don’t tell Radmila, but I interviewed with another language academy today.
Because it’s always important to know what else is out there. It’s important to know what the current market is like.
The company approached me and I decided to take the interview.
It started off as the typical teacher interview with the typical questions. “How do you begin your classes?”, “What icebreakers and games do you use to keep your classes engaging?” “What’s your teaching philosophy?” “What experience do you have with adults?”, “Do you have experience with kids?”, “Where do you get your teaching material from?”, etc…
I answered his questions and, pleased with my replies, he went on to explain the company’s system, the company’s philosophy, etc…
You know what’s next…. “Do you have any questions for me?”
The man’s eyes could not open any wider when I asked…
He clarified that this was an interview for a teacher position only, not a marketing position.
I clarified that I understood what position the interview was for and asked again… “What if I bring a client to your company. Do I get compensated for each of their students or do I only get paid for the hours that I teach?”
He repeated that I would simply be a teacher. He further explained that they would appreciate it if I brought clients to their company, but that I would only be compensated for the hours that I teach to the students that they decide to give me.
So logically, I asked what compensation I would receive for those hours – 15euros/hour.
Let’s say I recruit a company that has 20 employees that need to take English class. (*Sidenote – I know what you’re thinking. How the hell would I be able to recruit a company like that? Don’t worry, I’ll get to that later). The average rate on the market right now for 1-to-1 classes (or B-2-B or I-to-I, or whatever other made up name they’re using nowadays) is 30euros/hour. The average rate for group classes is 15/hr/per student. Let me clarify. This is what the academies charge, not what you get.
Let’s say they decide to give me a 1-to1 class and a group of 4 students, 2 hours a week for each. I would get compensated 60 euros total a week for those 5 students. The academy would be making 170euros per week for only those 5 students and I would only get 60. Now don’t forget about the other 15 employees that you brought. Depending on the types of classes the other students are taking, that’s roughly another 510euros per week for the academy. That’s a total of 680 euros per week for the academy. And I get 60euros compensation from that because they decided to give those students to another teacher.
I have no control over the hours they give me, no control over the price for those classes, no control over the compensation I receive for those classes, no control over anything, and only 60euros in my pocket.
I recruit a company and 20 of their employees will take English class. I believe in the Oxinity system, so I convince them all to take group classes at 14/hr(yes, lower than the average market price). Now, the real differences begin. 14euros X 20 employees X 2 hours = 560.
Let’s say I decide to teach all of those hours. Oxinity takes 10%. That’s 504 for me. Already a lot better than the 60 euros from the other company, right? But it gets better.
With Oxinity, I have complete control over which of those students I teach. And the ones I decide not to teach… I STILL GET 40% WHILE SOMEONE ELSE TEACHES FOR ME. Yes, for real. I get 40% for not teaching those classes. For doing nothing. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Zero.
So now let’s say I decide I don’t want to teach any of them. I would rather be laying on the beach with a mojito. I get 40% of that 504. That’s 201.6 for doing, I repeat, NOTHING. Nothing except for drinking my mojito on the beach, of course (which is not easy when your nails are freshly painted, may I add. But hey, I’m getting paid for it. I’ll figure it out).
Need yet another advantage? You don’t have to prep the classes at Oxinity, and the material is actually good. It’s made by other teachers. It’s not just another grammar activity about John going to the train station. The material is based on current events, interesting topics, and it cover structures and vocabulary that are often forgotten about in academies.
Still not convinced? Let’s review.
This academy I interviewed for today offers exactly the same thing as all of the other academies I’ve worked at and interview for. A fixed rate for a certain number of hours.
At these academies, you’re just a puppet in their system, a hamster making the wheel turn with no help, doing the real work while the rest of them make a pretty penny. You’re easily replaceable. You’re unappreciated and poorly paid.
At Oxinity, you ARE the system. When you decide to work with Oxinity, you keep the system going and you get fairly compensated for it. You decide when to run on the hamster wheel and when to drink your mojitos on the beach(ok, I couldn’t help squeezing another one in there, sorry). You get what you deserve for the work that you do.
*That sidenote from earlier… Oxinity gives you the tools and teaches you how to recruit those companies. The Oxinity team holds your hand through the process. They make it easy. And this is coming from someone who, before Oxinity, couldn’t sell anything to her own mother.
